Workshop: Walking as Learning to See

September 25 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

Free – $10

Sight is the dominant sense with which we are trained to take in the world around us. In “Walking As Learning to See,” a sensory observation workshop, artist Roberley Bell will lead exercises designed to amplify the other senses—hearing, touch, smell, and taste. Participants will explore the physical characteristic of place. The workshop will teach participants to draw upon the range of sensory experiences to fully “see” their environment. Systems of observation and methods of recording information will be introduced as a means to address interpretations of place.

The aim of this workshop is to provide participants with a method for learning to “see” the world around them through all their senses, a way to record this information, and a means to use the information as a tool for developing creative projects.

Bell has led sensory observation workshops for over a decade in cities around the world and at home in Rochester, New York. Her 2017 book Do You Know This Tree? is the culmination of a ten-year walking project in Istanbul. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, including at deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Alan Gallery in Istanbul, and Medea Gallery in Malmö, Sweden. She has completed public art projects in Chicago, Pittsburgh, Cambridge, Cleveland, Istanbul, and Kaliningrad, Russia.

This workshop is presented in connection with Roberley Bell: The Landscape Stares Back, an outdoor sculptural installation on view in BMAC’s Sculpture Garden through November 2022.
